If anyone has ever told you that the longer you run, the more calories you burn, and the faster you lose weight...is wrong! In fact, doing short cardio workouts (i.e. sprints) at an increasingly intense pace, burns fat 3 times as much as endurance jogging. The most effective way to burn fat in terms of supplementing cardio into your workout is by jogging right before lifting and sprinting about five 40-60 yard dashes after your weight-training workout. Remember, sprints should be done at a gradually increasing rate. In activating your metabolism, the first aspect of the cycle that is stimulated is the heart rate (via the pre-workout jog). Then, the aerobic or anaerobic exercises in turn activate your metabolism through continuous conditioning of muscle fibers. Finally, while your metabolism is peaking at the end of your workout, the additional short distance sprinting actually elongates the amount of time and energy your metabolism uses (This is a prime reason why eating after a workout is recommended). Good luck with your training!
