What the cool-down does is:
• Allows the body to relax • Helps discard some of the wasted products formed in the muscles – including lactic acid – improving muscle recovery time • allows the heart rate to return to it's resting rate
Cooling down should consist of the following:
1. The general cool-down.
In this phase you decrease body temperature and remove waste products from the working muscles. It consists of 5 to 10 minutes light jogging/walking on a treadmill.
2. Static stretching.
Static stretching involves lengthening the muscles as far as they will comfortably go. Static stretching helps decrease body temperature, remove waste products from the working muscles and to increase range of movement.
Tips: I. Static stretching should be performed at the end of a training session, this is the best time to relax and develop maximum flexibility with muscles that are pre-exhausted and thoroughly warmed-up. II. Stretching should not be Painful.
III. Stretch so that you feel tension in the belly of the muscle being stretched, not the connection points at either end of the muscle.
