Cooling down

on 1/10/2008 by jillybean | filed in: Other
After a workout it is important to take a few minutes to cool down gradually. You should never stop exercising abruptly. Cooling down helps to redistribute blood in your body after a workout. This will help to prevent muscle stiffness the next day. So after a run, walk around for a few extra minutes instead of sitting down or stopping.

I agree. I usually do a two minute cooldown before I get off the tredmill.

Agreed, you won't be as sore later that day or the following day because cooling down washes away that lactic acid just sitting in your muscles and forces blood to return to the heart rather than pooling in the legs.

I used to run track in high school... I ran the 800 meter and the mile, and when we were finished with our race we NEVER sat down for at least 20 minutes. Take a relaxing walk and sip some water. If you lie down right away you're going to be sore when you finally get up.
