Get Fit While Doing Activities You Enjoy

on 2/3/2008 by Rusty | filed in: Other
I recently had a young guy comment on my site and what he said bummed me out a bit. His personal trainer told him that to get really fit, he would need to stop playing basketball and just focus on lifting. I hate this type of advice! Life is short...you need to do the things you enjoy while you can. I told the young man to keep playing basketball and lift weights as well. I also told him that I would be disappointed if he quit playing.

My Tip: Get in shape in the context of a fun and fulfilling life. Don't ever skip a camping trip or playing ball with your friends, etc....because you have a workout scheduled. When you are 80 and looking back on your life, are you going to be upset that you skipped a few workouts...or are you going to be bummed out that you missed a fun time with friends and family who love you?

Another great tip! Also I'd like to add - if you play a sport like basketball or soccer, or any other type of intense outdoor activity, don't stop doing it. If you stop doing something, your body gradually loses the ability to perform it. This is not due so much to your aging, but simply to the fact that you've stopped performing it. This year I played basketball after not having played for a long period of time. My knees had gotten unaccustomed to the stress of the sport and as a result I am still recovering from an inflammation of the patellar tendon. As Jack Lalane says - you have to keep being active to be able to be active :)

Wouldn't basketball help reinforce bodybuilding? As long as he compensates the energy requirements for both activities, he would in theory, have a better body than somebody that JUST lift weights for the same amount of time that the basketball player would. It would also keep his heart rate up, therefore shuttling more nutrients to repair muscle trauma. It is all about quantity and quality of food.

Yep Hulbs...life is about interacting with great people and doing things that you enjoy. I talked this young kid out of quitting basketball and re-inforced the idea that athletic physiques look better than 100% gym built bodies.
