Through personal experience, trial and error I have found that walking is vastly important through out your pregnancy. Just because you are pregnant doesn't mean you are completely fragile. Talk to your doctor about fitness during pregnancy and they can let you know that it is safe as long as you do it right.
I gained 100 lbs in my last pregnancy 5 years ago and didn't do any walking or exercise, the weight gain in my pregnancy was very hard on my body and ended having to leave work early because it was too painful to carry myself around.
This time around the first 3 months was very tiring and decided to wait till the first trimester was over to start walking and I did by that time my weight gain even though it was only 26lbs was making my tail bone hurt and I didn't want to go through what I did in my last pregnancy.
I have been walking every day since March 27, 2009. I started off walking 1KM at a day until my body was able to handle more. Now in my 22 week I am walking between 4KM to 7KM each day, everyday. I have never felt better and guess what, my back pain is gone. I have no more pain in tail bone. I can sit, stand, walk, turnover in bed...without that pain.
So please take my advice and walk during pregnancy and your labor and delivery will be much better (still painful but much better) and you will bounce back after more quickly.
