The Best Way to Lose Weight

on 1/22/2008 by ApolloFit | filed in: Strength Training
I know it sounds contridictory, but there have been a lot of studies recently showing that strength training is actually one of the best ways to shed bodyfat. You burn more calories, increase your metabolism, and tone the muscles all at the same time.
Think about it this way. When you do a session of cardio, the amount of calories you burn stops once you complete the exercise. This is not the case with strength training. After you finish a strength training workout, your body actually has to repair and improve on the muscles you just worked so you can function normally and lift a little more weight the next time you workout. The result is that you actually burn calories for the next 24-48 hours.
The other reason for this, is when you tone up the muscles, you are actually building muscles just a little bit. This extra muscle actually increases your metabolism and you can burn calories like crazy!
Just remember, cardio is still important, so don't cut it out of your program.

HI ApolloFit,
you are pretty much right about everything you are saying, except you do burn some extra fat also after a hard cardio workout but not as much like after weight trainig.

I do agree with KPmodel. Cardio should not be excluded from the workout. You always want to complete your cardio after strength training. Cardio burns a lot of calories in a short amount of time, so when used with strength training can really be effective. There are also many other benefits, especially when following a kick ass strength training routine with a cardio session.

I have to disagree with mrspartan. I know that he has lost a tremendous amount of weight over the last year and a half, but I have seen this work for many of my own clients at various stages of weight loss. Whether large mass or toning work, muscle kicks your metabolism into high gear and when done right, this will work for everyone no matter the stage you are in.
