Shin splints is a 'wastebasket' term, meaning a 'collective' term used for anterior shin pain. There are some suggestive ways to help prevent them, but mostly what it comes down to is the type of foot you have and how well it lands correctly. Usually with people who suffer greatly from shin splints will have to get fitted for orthotics to help fix the issue. For myself in the past, I've bought over-the-counter (well, over-the-internet, actually) orthotics, the Walk-Fit ones you may have seen on TV. They were called Phase-4 at the time I got them. They seemed to help out greatly.
