And if it's before, what's the best thing to eat? Protein, Carbs, Veggies....?

don't eat before or directly after. doing cardio after resistance training is a great way to burn fat, but working out without having any protein or carbs for energy will make your body rely on stored energy, aka fat. so you will burn fat while you work out.
needless to say, eating right before eliminates this. i don't think you want a meal right after either

If you consume food, regardless of what it is, your body redirects blood flow away from your working muscles to your abdomen to aid in digestion and absorption of the nutrients. Therefor this diminishes the available blood flow for exercise which ultimately reduces your VO2 Max capacity. This diminishes you ability to perform aerobic work making you draw on anaerobic means sooner than you normally would. A little physiology 101.

I would personally say a well balanced meal no more than an hour (maybe even closer to 2 hours) prior to your workout, and then eat another well balanced meal within the hour after your workout.

-I would say upwards to 2 hours before so your body has a chance to fully digest your meal and so it can also absorb and be able to utilize those nutrients during your workout as any less than an hour you can risk getting cramps or getting bloated or something among those lines because your body shunts blood away from your stomach and intestines during exercise to your muscles.

-Within the hour post workout so your body can then use those nutrients for recovery immediately. There are lots of opinions about what is best as to weather you have a fast digesting protein such as whey or something like that, but I personally don't think you should rely on supplements that much because that's what they should only be used for and do not replace the value of whole food. You can get all the nutrients you need from food and it is more easily digested and utilized. Unless you are in a pinch and need something really quick that is the only time I would say have a protein drink or meal replacement.

-I prefer well balanced meals with a little protein, carbs, and fats with lots of veggies or fruit. This way you can get all the nutrients you need for normal cellular function during workouts without having to rely on anything else, or spending lots of money on stuff you probably don't really even need. Just my opinion, but it works well for me.

I have been doing this for the last couple months and have lost a good 10 lbs and I feel like all I do is eat...which I certainly don't complain about at all....I have had incredible gains in my muscular strength and endurance as well as cardiovascular endurance and lost a lot of fat....just by eating regular food.

Hope this helps out.

The best thing to eat before a workout is carbohydrates because it will give you the energy that is needed during a workout.Carbs play a significant role in ATP consumption because if the added fuel is not delivered properly it will take from the muscle itself. So eating proper carbs will fuel that muscle and not take what is needed to maintain muscle growth.Read my carbs blog the answer is there Margo.

For me it depends on the workout.

For strength training it helps me to eat a light snack about 1/2 hour before a workout, such as a piece of fruit or a granola bar. Then immediately after (or within 30 minutes, at least) I'll have a protein drink. I'll follow that up with a meal that balances natural protein and complex carbs. What that meal consists of depends on if it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner - but that's a whole 'nother topic.

For a cardio session, I don't eat anything before and I'll have the same meal afterwards as I would for strength training sans the extra protein.

I can't claim to know the science behind this approach, but I can tell you that being consistent has really fired up my metabolism. A hot fire will burn a big log in no time, but put a log on a small fire and it will go out :)

mrspartan I wait two hours befor and after unless gaining mass, it helps you get lean for some reason. - mrspartan
