Anyone else find it tough?

on 5/26/2009 by fitnessnazi | filed in: Other

It seems like my geographical area is very "not healthy".  This makes it extremely difficult to be around people and friends in general.  It's hard to find like-minded individuals who eat what I do and are trying to take charge of their health.  So........join an online forum to meet people I guess!  JEEEEEZ!  Anyone else have this issue?

Absolutely! But that's why there aren't as many fit people as there are unfit people - because it's HARD! I try to remember this when my friends are excluding me from activities because they know I won't eat at a particular restaurant, or they know I'm ordering club soda at the bar. Probably the biggest conflict comes from the fact that I go to bed early EVERY night because I insist on 8 hours of sleep and early morning cardio - staying out late isn't an option.

Be proud of what you're doing and use the fact that less than 2% of the US population is a body builder (or whatever your forte is) because it's hard. Anyone can eat whatever and sit on the couch all day. Only a few of us are strong enough to be smarter than that!

Pack your cooler, bring your food with you, be prepared and don't let them get to you. If they can't understand your motives then maybe they aren't as good of friends as you thought they were. Try to remember too that some people will look at you with envy, because they know what you're doing is the right thing. Perhaps their secret desire to see you fail is out of guilt?

Where you live is probably not as much of a factor as you think. I believe that gaining and maintaing fitness the proper and healthy way is not as much of a priority in our society as it should be. Sites like this are good avenues for getting diet and fitness information out there! :D

I know what you mean about being around people who do not eat and drink healthy. I do not drink alchohol except for a few sips to toast at weddings. It is more difficult as so many social events emphasize alchohol. People take it personally if you do not join them in consuming toxins and empty calories. All that being said I prefer my healthy decision and life style. I have seen from family memebers the impact alchohol can have on the body and I know I have made the right choice. Never give up, never give in !
KPmodel Any person that would "take it personally" that you opt out of the alcohol consumption is NOT a friend! They probably feel guilty that you are making the right choice for your health and they are not. - KPmodel

yep!

It is hard to eat right when everyone around you has a comment about it.

Hence.... why I like this site so much.

fitnessnazi I am focused. My friends give me a hard time for bringing my own "turkey burger" to cookouts. I bring veggies and berries to munch on while we talk and hang out. It's obsessive. They all know about my "lunch bag" that I drag EVERYWHERE with me! But it is going to pay off! The feeling of being the healthiest and getting complements on your physique is all the reward in the world! - fitnessnazi

I'm actually living in a college town now....more healthy minded people here....I notice a big change when I visit my home town in Tx......Lots of over weight people of all ages, it's just not a priority for them. Instead of letting people influence me, I try and make an impact on them when it comes to healthy choices!
fitnessnazi I live in a military town....that is sad. These guys should be in great shape! They run in the mornings for PT but I think at a certain point their bodies become "immune" if that makes sense. The obesity around here is sad. They need healthier choices of extracurricular and places to eat. We have Subway and Jason's Deli.....that's it! and most people around here hit the bars hard on the weekends! - fitnessnazi

Fitness is a lifestyle and it is much easier being around like minded people !! You will find a wealth of info here and many friends !!!!!! Good Luck !!
fitnessnazi It is nice to talk to people who have the same goals and don't think you are crazy when you talk about "packing your cooler for the day", "checking my BMI" or "up'ing my cardio". haha - fitnessnazi
