Life is crazy around this time of year. Getting things ready for the holidays is a pain, and we often grab fast food and skip workouts to save time. To top it all off - when the great Christmas day comes - we eat... And we eat a lot.
Therefore, we're left with two options on Christmas Day
(or so we think).
1. Forget about dieting and working out and lay around eating all day.
2. Suffer watching friends and family pig out while you calorie count.
There's another option, which I highly recommend. It's a "meet half way" type of deal (I personally like those). Instead of waking up for another lazy (but still exciting) Christmas morning, jump out of bed and dig into a workout. If you're lucky, maybe your gym will be open on Christmas day. Performing a morning allows you to pig out all day and not feel guilty about it. Well, you might still feel guilty, but at least you'll have a jump start on burning off the Christmas calories. Think of t... read more

Scared of becoming senile in your old age? Well if you don't want to be anything like the picture to the right (that's me btw) then you probably should get out and exercise.
New experiments show that exercise actually helps slow the aging process - specifically with respect to brain functions. Although the testing has only been performed on mice - Taiwanese scientists have found that regular exercise helps continue the production of brain stem cells.
“As we age, the ability of producing new neurons is decreasing. However, moderate running can improve the production, survival and maturation of new neurons in the brain,” said lead researcher Yu-Min Kuo, an associate professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at the National Cheng Kung University Medical College in Tainan. “The younger one starts to run, the better.”
The report is published in the November issue of the Journal of Applied Physiology.
According to the study, m... read more

Alli is one of the most popular over-the-counter weight loss supplements of the year. Developed by GlaxoSmithKline, it is well known that the weight loss supplement is FDA approved. Some of you may have read my recent post about the negative side effects of alli, here I discuss the marketing aspect.
Alli consists mostly of orlistat, which in high doses, is only available by prescription. Orlistat stops the absorption of fats, which can aid in weight loss.
If it’s FDA approved, it has to be the answer… right?
Not necessarily. The only thing that is certain is that GlaxoSmithKline threw out a lot of money to get both the FDA approval – and spent a lot more money getting the word of it’s FDA approved status out to the public.
Just because the FDA approved that orlistat can assist weight loss does not mean that they support all of the Alli weight loss claims. Furthermore, Alli is not the first supplement to have the FDA approval. Other su... read more

Memorial Day Weekend is finally here and we can all enjoy a three day weekend. Most of us are looking forward to some boozing and hanging out with friends - and traveling if you're not phased by the screwy gas prices.
You could use this extra day off to jump-start your fitness goals!
If you don't have much planned this weekend, definitely spend time planning out your health and fitness goals (if it's important to you... I imagine it is because you're on this site). This vacation is an excellent way to get back on track and really gear up for bathing suit weather. By the way, if you're just starting to think about getting a bathing suit bod now, you're a little behind schedule... but it's not too late.
Am I saying you should spend all weekend on a treadmill?
No... In fact, maybe just throw one or two workouts in this holiday weekend. But, there's several things you can do to get your health life back on track.
1. Take advantage o... read more

Walking, a very simple exercise, has many health benefits. In fact, it is proven to increase your life span - more legitimately proven than that exercise gizmo you ordered off of late night tv.
A study conducted over 8 years, with 13,000 people, showed significant decrease in premature death with subjects who walked 30 minutes a day when compared to those who were mostly inactive. It's pretty crazy to think that every step your take your somewhat buying yourself another millisecond of time on earth.
How does Walking Increase Longevity?
Walking does many things to increase both longevity and quality of life. Walking can help you live longer by lowering your blood pressure, reducing blood cholesterol, and improving your cardiovascular system. It also improves how well you live the rest of your life by maintaining the youth of your body. Walking assists maintenance of bone strength and burns calories to avoid weight gain.
Want to live longer an... read more
