Throw Some Intermittent Fasting Into Your Diet for Good Health

Throw Some Intermittent Fasting Into Your Diet for Good Health Ask any orthodox dieter whether you should incorporate fasting into your diet and they will think you're crazy. Depending on how much fasting you do - you may actually 'be' crazy. But there are actually many experts out there who insist that moderate fasting can be beneficial for your diet and health.

Fasting, for those who don't know, is the action of choosing not to eat or drink (or both) for a given period of time. The popular belief is that while fasting may result in weight loss, it is not a healthy long term habit. Not only can fasting leave you malnurished, but it can also cause mental stress and cause you to give up your healthy eating habits completely.

Fasting may actually be good for you

When done right, fasting is now said to be good for you. Experts are saying that fasting promotes weight loss and reduces disease risk. But there's more - fasting is said to even extend life. Sounds crazy, but many are saying that eating less will cause you to live longer. So over time, you'll actually eat more I'm assuming cause you'll be around longer to enjoy more meals. Or, maybe we're put on earth programmed with a certain number of calories we can eat - then we croak (that's why they have to give last meals to executed prisoners - think about that!).

So who's saying that fasting can be good for you? Some dude named Dr. Marc Hellerstein is throwing around some claims - and because it says "Dr." if front of his name, I guess we'll listen. Hellerstein says that fasting one day a week can benefit almost anyone (excluding bodybuilders I'm guessing). He points out other studies proving that fasting reduces the body's sensitivity to insulin, which helps maintain normal sugar levels. Normalizing the sugar levels helps to increase longevity (live longer - yay!).

Fasting against Cancer

The studies also show that fasting slows the growth of abnormal cells. Hellerstein points out how this slowed growth of abnormal cells can rduce the risk of developing Cancer.

Clearing Toxins in the Body
Many experts claim that fasting or following a special diet can help to flush out toxins in the body. Often times these diets involve focusing your diet on fruit and almost always involve avoiding red meat. Another alternative to following a cleansing diet is to try and herbal cleansing supplement.

My concerns about Fasting
- If fasting slows growth of abnormal cells, does it also slow growth or normal ones?
- Fasting won't help if you make up for all of those missed calories the next day.
- Like many believe, fasting may lead to being moody and giving up a healthy diet altogether

What do you think - Intermittent Fasting: Healthy or Unhealthy?

Fasting once a week is not bad at all. Done in moderation is good. Drinking plenty of water (tea as well) and sticking to fruit (like apples) cleanses the body. It helps release toxins.

Fasting is a spiritual thing that requires faith. Its not supposed to be about physical health, but spiritual health. What good does it do you to have a great body, and your soul is all mucked up?

Dude, that goes against everything you guys have taught me in the last three weeks. Won't your body start losing muscle if you start fasting? I had a few people on here tell me that it was bad for me to only intake 1600 calories a day. I can't imagine what they would have said if I had told them that I was fasting! lol

SB... fasting is a short term thing...

I used to think of it as those people who live in the woods and eat berries and hum... who will fast for like 40 days or something. ... then become skeletal looking.

Then I had a gallbladder attack and read about fasting as therapy... I also learned different types of fasting through my yoga studies. Fasting is like a... retreat... for the body...
You don't do it everyday... just once in a while as needed.

Think about it... we fast every night (unless you sleep-eat)
then we have breakfast (break-fast) in the morning... which is wonderful stimulation for the body.
The body can get exhausted... it needs a refresher and a cleansing.

Anyone starting a fast... I suggest only 18-24 hours to start... and drink water, juice in moderation, and eat some broth. This is basically a liquid fast and helps your system begin to relax.

I knew some people who tried fasting the first time for like 72 hours and went hard core... they made themselves sick.
and... remember... too much juice results in too much sugars and sometimes lots of time on the toilet... no good.

I have an article somewhere in this computer... I can look it up. It might help explain a bit more.

Good input Marcia and Ndestructibl.

If anyone decides to start working some fasting into their diet, I recommend asking these 2 for more advice on how to do so properly.

I love fasting a couple times a month for 24-36 hours. I used to do it by accident when working a lot (dinner to dinner the next day)
Fasting is not some stressful event that is announced and causes starvation.

There are many forms of fasting and anyone interested in it should research the style for the purpose... and do it correctly!

I usually do my fasts just to relieve stress in the body and allow my digestive system and organs to catch up. I also have done a couple fasts to help heal my gallbladder and strengthen my kidneys.

I never thought of fasting for weight loss... I always considered that backwards... I am sure it works temporarily, but not for long term.

If you fast too long without building up... you could get very sick as you stir up toxins and other reactions.

As with anything else.... don't over do it... get training, and moderation!
