How the Big Guy Loses Respect in the Gym

on 1/25/2008
How the Big Guy Loses Respect in the Gym When a big guy walks into the gym, it's almost the environment of a prison yard. The bigger you are, the more respect you have. People aren't judging you based on how hot your girlfriend is, what kind of a car you drive, or how your hair looks... People are thinking one thing and one thing only. Muscle. That's what everyone came to the gym to work on, and if you've got the most, you are the alpha male.

Every gym has a least one or two of these monstrous characters. Some have many, in which case, they become nothing but an average joe anyway. But when these slabs of muscle enter a regular gym, they are respected for their sheer size. For that 40-60 minutes of lifting, they are the kings of the gym. When they ask you for a spot, you're flattered by the fact that he thinks you're strong enough to help if something goes wrong while he's benching 50 million lbs. Then part of you is thinking, what am I going to do if this monster's arms give out for some reason. Regardless, you give them a spot to the best of your abilities because, after all, this is HIS gym.

However, I have encountered several giants who walked into the gym with everyone in aw, only to walk an hour or two later with everyone snickering at the buffoon. There are several ways that a guy can go from king of the gym to joke of the gym. First, involves clothing and body hair. There are 2 things that are understandable: (1) A guy who can't help having a big hairy back, and (2) A guy who worked hard for big muscles and likes to show them off by wearing minimal clothes. The problem arises when these 2 understandable circumstances are combined. If you are a big guy with a wooly back, you're going to need to hold off on wearing the little powerlifting spandex tank tops.

Another way the big guy can lose respect in the gym is by grunting when grunting is not gruntworthy. Although I am not a fan of grunting, I understand that when a guy is lifting every plate in the gym it may be appropriate. However, these large mammals are so used to grunting from the big stuff, that sometimes they forget they're just doing their warm-up, and need to understand that grunting is for when you are struggling, not for broadcasting yourself to the gym.

Finally, big guys lose respect in the gym when they use terrible form to lift even more weight than they already can. It's quite pointless for him anyway. He already knows that he can lift more than anyone else, and he should know that everyone around him is probably impressed by his strength. But when I see him throwing all of his weight into doing some hammer curls or cheating in any other exercise, it immediately demonstrates inferiority. Why? Because I've seen another guy from another gym lift that much weight before, and they did it the right way. If this guy lifted the max weight that he can do while maintaining non-cheating form, I would never know what his good-form max was. But now I know, and I can compare it to people I've seen in the past who have done it the right way.

So I think everyone would agree that guys who are 280 lbs of muscle carry a lot of weight (respect) in the gym. But that can always change if they act like an idiot.

Gym etiquette is key to maintaining respect. I think the thing that drives me most crazy, and this isn't limited to big guys, is when people don't take care of or put away equipment when they're done with it.

Nothing worse than following around someone who walks away from a bench or machine right after they finish their set and it's covered in sweat and whatever weights they were using are still in place.

Unless you're going to bring your mom in to clean up after you, put your stuff away!

Hey Marshall how are you?
my gripe ( and I have not been in a commercial gym in quit a while) imagime the guys at the DB rack doing curls, just 2 feet from the rack he finishes and drops the weights to the floor in front of him ( just 1 foot from the rack ) and then the idiot turns a walks away like he did nothing. then it snowballs cause the next guy figures its okay and by the time you get thier thier half the DB's spread out all over the gym.

Ryan you make very valid points.
I believe the gym kings loose focus and descend into unsafe behaviors such as lifting more than they are capable of, and looking around when they should be concentrating.

I think skimpy clothing is distracting whether male or female. We are supposed to be in the gym to sculpt and build our physiques not give our eyes exercise. Human nature being what it is, I suppose it is safe to say "everyone looks" or "almost everyone looks".

Bad form is reckless, irrespective of weight. You may get by cheating once or twice but sooner or later you are going to injure yourself and sometimes these injuries are for the duration, and can take you away from the pursuit of the ultimate physique.

Dam I am leaving lol, but had to respond to this.
First for 99% of this I agree nothing blows me away as somebody showing off, lifting way more than they should or making to much noise just to bring attention to themselves, but now for another side.
When your on your 7 or 8th rep of lets say 315 on bench ( just an example for most guys this is tough ) and your pushing that bar to your sticking point almost at lockout that scream is not only pain but its a blast of power pulled from your gut, and 99 % of the time I ( and I am refereing to me no one else lol) when I am at that point I hold strict form and if I cannot get it without arching my back and crawling all over the bench my spotter takes it Another reason I built my own gym was to avoid having to offend the weekender that lifts for fitness not size and srtrength that does not understand such things. Please I am not refering to anyone in particular or making lite of anyones preferences, Its just I am used to real Iron Gyms before the fitness craze took over and now we have to be extra polite and maintain respectability. I can remember training with guys shirtless and barefoot training in comfort, grey plain walls,90% free weights hardcore plate machines now you got mostly Cybex style equipment and you have to wear shoes and shirts you have to fit a particular style, Commercial gyms are out of control these days.

Grunting isn't always necessary, but for some people it is uncontrollable as it is just how their body reacts. For a lot of them, however, it's just making noise.

For myself, I make some sort of low, quiet growling noise and I can honestly tell you I have no idea where it came from, why I do it, or even have any control over it. I noticed it first when I was wrestling in high school and my training partner brought it up...I had no clue until he pointed it out. It's kinda weird, actually. I can only imagine what sort of strange freak my opponents must have thought I was, lol.

That's just something I try to control while I work out because I don't want to be "that guy" who exists in every gym that thinks to be a tough guy he has to make the most noise, trying to accentuate how powerful he is...especially considering I'm nowhere near the biggest or strongest guy in the gym (maybe top 100?).

Yes! There is a guy at a gym in Sydney who screams while lifting his weights then recites everything that Ronnie Coleman says "Lightweight baby" & "wooooo" what a tosser..major! He has a great body but unfortunately he lost respect as soon as he opened his mouth! Moral of this story... if you are not Ronnie Coleman dont scream like Ronnie Coleman

yea i see more average lifters doing these things than the bigger guys, its just as comical to see a smaller guy wearing minimal clothes and posing in the mirror as it is to see a bigger guy atleast to me it is. But then again I'm one of those that strive to be the biggest as bodybuilding is my goal so my opinion might be a little one sided here :)
