Fitconnect Announcement on some Issues

on 4/16/2009 | filed in: News
This post is in response to some blogs and direct emails I’ve received regarding several matters. Before responding, I’d like to first off thank everyone for their participation on Fitconnect – we appreciate the advice/opinions you’ve shared with the community.

The main concerns I’ve noticed and will discuss below are:
1. Re-posting other site’s content
2. Negative comments toward other Fitconnect members
3. The Point System
4. Progress of the Exercises and Workout Tracking sections
5. When I’ll answer everyone’s messages

Re-posting other blog’s content:

Following copyright law, it’s required to receive permission and cite sources when taking content from another site. Since some members have complained about users copying content and using it to gain more points, why don’t we have a rule of etiquette that all users keep copying to a minimum? For the most part, let’s keep everything as original content, but if you do find an article you’d really like to share with the group, then you may do that occasionally (and cite sources). In the future, we may add a link sharing system similar to digg that will allow you to share lots of articles. Thoughts on this new rule?

Negative Comments toward other Fitconnect Members:
This involves a large grey area since Health and Fitness is a very opinionated set of topics. The science of it all is pretty factual but people often have different physical fitness goals and different philosophies on how to achieve them. Strong opinions often lead to debates, which then leads to arguments or rude comments. Our goal is to keep the community really “chill” and positive, but I don’t want to totally ban debating. I think differing opinions discussed on comment boards can often help people to see both sides and learn from them. I think Fitconnect is a lot friendlier of a community than you’ll find at places like Craigslist (the people on there get evil). However, we have received some complaints about overly rude comments.

So can we all try to do our best to keep comments opinionated, but not personal? If you make a sarcastic comment and don’t mean to be rude, throw the person a message and tell them you’re just kidding or something. Let’s keep it as positve as we can.

The Point System:
We will eventually be modifying the point system to be more focused on how popular and well received your content is, rather than simply how much you post. Also, for those newcomers, we will be adding a point bracket that only tracks points earned in the past month. This way you can still top the charts if you just joined, while we’ll still know who’s been around and active the longest.

Progress on Exercises and Workout Tracking:

We’ve made about a million modifications on our plans for Exercises and Workouts. I have no control over when and how the Exercises/Tracking sections are setup, as Troy is the sole person in charge of when features are added to the site. For those who came here after watching The Money and The Power, they edited out parts where I talked about how the company is an equal partnership. I truly believe the Exercises and Routines sections will be up soon but I know you regulars have been hearing that for months. Some positive news is that I’ve checked his progress charts and he’s checked off a lot of tasks for the Exercises section.

How will these 3 new sections work?
I’ll be posting a video explaining it soon, but here’s a quick breakdown. Exercises will be a database of basic exercises provided by us, and users will be allowed to submit their own exercises as well. The Routines section will allow you to put different exercise combinations (from the exercise section) into a workout routine. The tracking section, will then allow you to track individual exercises, whole routines, as well as many other things (calories, weight, supplement use, anything you want).
The features will roll out in pieces, so please don’t assume that something is our finished product when you see it for the first time.

When will I answer everyone’s messages?
Since the show it’s been very hard to respond to all of the messages but I’m doing my best to catch up and respond. Eventually I hope to respond to all blog posts and comments too (hopefully). If I don’t respond to a message, I might have missed it or didn’t get to it yet, or most likely read it and forgot to respond because I have a short attention span. Feel free to keep messaging, I’ll do my best to respond.

Please feel free to comment below as well as discuss among each other how you feel about this new plan.

Hey darlin, you are human too, you have a life aside from fitconnect, just the fact that you do respond and are as involved with your members and fans is phenomenal. We luv ya, lol, and we understand. You're doing great and helping change lives, that's gotta feel great! You keep it real and are the same person as you were before the show, that's very uncommon! Stay amazing (and no offense to your girlfriend or my hubby) And Stay Sexy!!!lol. :)

Sounds good brotha! I am definately looking forward to the logging section. Right now I've just been carrying a little notebook around with me everywhere I go and it gets torn and misplaced at times.

One thing I love about this site is that you and Troy are very good at taking user opinions into consideration and making updates as you see fit. It's nice to feel like a part of the creative process as well. I love what you guys have done with the site - it's only going to get better from here.

I do get sick of some people posting stuff that they've found on the internet and taking credit for writing it themselves. I agree that there's nothing wrong with bringing a good article or blog to the community for reviewing and discussing, as long as that person sites the source and doesn't try to make it sound like they wrote it. That's stealing and it's wrong. On the other hand, I can't believe that some people get so caught up in the points game that they feel the need to get pissed off and tattle on each other. I feel like that's how grade school kids act. This isn't some kind of popularity contest. It's a web site dedicated to bringing fitness oriented people together to share advice and ideas. If someone want's to sit on their computer all day long and cut and paste articles to boost their rank, then so be it. I'de rather spend less time blogging and more time working out, but to each their own! lol

As far as negative comments, I've received a couple now and then, but I just blow it off and go on with my day. I've received far more support than rudeness. I think this is a very friendly community overall, as well as very helpful. I think a few people are confusing constructive criticism with rudeness. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they're being rude. From my experience, if you really feel that someone is being rude to you, the best thing you can do is ignore them. Just don't respond. This isn't "the streets". There's nothing to prove here - we're all just trying to become better people by reaching our full potential.

As far as you and Troy getting back to people's messages and questions, I'm all good brotha! You guys usually get back to me eventually, so I don't sweat it. People need to make up their minds - which would they rather have? You and Troy working hard to update the site, or sitting down and answering all their messages. I think people should also realize that you were on T.V., so obviously you get a lot of messages - and I imagine some of them don't even have anything to do with the site.

Anyway, thanks for the update man. I look forward to seeing the future of FC!

Great!

I LOVE a great debate! and sharing of opinions... but as anything... when the rude comments come out, it becomes not as informational or open minded.

I enjoy the blogs that reference articles or link to articles.. with the fitsters added opinion. The ones entirely posted from another author do not make it as personal or social of a community.

I am anxious to see how the exercises and workouts will be presented. There are a ton of ways to do this.

Thanks for the update Ryan!

Great, so we'll all make a move toward disagreeing without the rudeness. And yes, it's always fine to reference other sites and give your interpretation/opinion of them.

I often publish portions of content from my main blog in order to increase exposure for that content. I link back to the original post so that people can read more if they wish. Is this OK?

Yep.. that's fine.

I agree on the first two points and what you describe is basically the FitConnect that I originally became a member of and found to be such a special community. Let's get back to it.

As far as the point system, with respect to blogs/tips/fitqs, my humble opinion is that the ratings "Rate This!" and number of responses should be 90% of the points awarded for a particular post. And some sort of complicated algorithm that actually subtracts points for proliferation of blogs with no responses (I know this won't work right now, since many blogs are workout trackers and those don't typically get responses).

Which brings me to the workout tracking - I've been waiting for that anxiously since the first mention of it. I use a different website right now for that which sucks and will move it here asap! BTW - being able to chart exercises & workouts individually or grouped over time to monitor progress as well as exporting to excel would be mandatory features... ;)

Thanks to both you and Troy for this excellent fitness resource and here's to moving forward in a positive way.
