I.C.E.

I.C.E. If you run, cycle, or LIVE, chances are someday you may be in an accident. I certainly HOPE that never happens to you (or to me), but it's best to be prepared. I bike with my cell phone, but it's too cumbersome for running. Several weeks ago a guy from my church who's an avid and EXPERIENCED (30 + yrs) cyclist took a spill, wasn't wearing a helmet, and was knocked unconscious. Lucky for him someone who recognized him stopped to help. But he had no ID on him. I was stunned. You should always have some form of I.D. and carry an I.C.E. (in case of emergency) contact. I keep a photocopy of my driver's license in my iPod case with an I.C.E., my daughter's name and cell phone #, on the back. You can also buy I.D. bracelets and shoe clips. It doesn't really matter what you choose. Just please make sure you do this. It could literally save your life!!!

I would recommend that you wear a medical alert bracelet when you run. Who's to say that anyone would bother to search your iPod case if you're unconscious. How would they know they needed to? Or God forbid if you get hit by a car and the iPod is sent flying into some tall grass where no one even sees it. With a medical alert bracelet you KNOW with certainty that any EMT's that respond will look for it immediately. This insures that your loved one's can be contacted right away and you aren't left as a patient "Jane Doe" until your family finds you.

Thanks. I never thought about those things! They actually make ID bracelets for runners. Maybe I should just go for it!!

The problem with getting just an ID bracelet is that if it doesn't have the medical alert symbol on it the EMT's and hospital staff generally don't glance twice at it. They are trained to look for that symbol. If it's not on your ID bracelet, you may end up having to wait for the police to get there and actually start investigating who "Patient Doe" is before anyone figures it out. If it were me, I would definitely go for the medic alert bracelet. It's not like you would have to wear it ALL the time. Just when you jog is fine.
