The Fat Loss Blame Game

on 2/26/2009 | filed in: Exercise and Workouts / Goals and Motivation
The Fat Loss Blame Game Whose fault is it that you're out of shape?

If you go by what you hear in diet ads then you believe that it's anyone's fault but yours.

The big diet companies think that if they put the blame on you, then you wouldn't buy their bogus pills. So they put the blame on your cortisol levels, your modern diet (ie fast food), or your busy schedule instead of where it belongs - which is squarely on your shoulders.

Sure, you have obstacles that get in your way - your schedule, your job, your kids, the weather, your knee injury from college...but ultimately you have the body that you accept.

I'm going to repeat that so it will really sink in.

You have the body that you accept.

Embracing the blame for your current weight is not a bad thing - it's empowering. Think about it. If it really wasn't your fault, if it really was due to a long list of variables that you have zero control over, then you'd be stuck. You'd have no way to change.

The Secret Behind 'Before and After' Pictures

Allow me to pull back the curtain for you on something that the diet industry doesn't want you to know. You've seen countless before and after pictures documenting weight loss as a result of a diet product. Well, there is more involved than just the diet product, and it's the same across the board.

Look into the eyes of any person in their before picture and you'll see that they are disturbed. The body they have is no longer in sync with the body they can accept.

They changed the body that they accept.

Now look into their eyes in the after picture - see the sweet satisfaction? They now own the body that they decided they could accept. And what a great feeling that is.

Your Time To Transform

Whether you realize it or not, you already posses everything you need to transform your body, but it all starts with taking responsibility for the body that you have today. You have your current body because until this moment you've been OK with it.

Oh sure, you aren't thrilled with it, and you even talk about losing weight and getting fit, but you haven't changed what you'll accept. Here's how to transform your body in 3 steps:

Step One: Get Disturbed

You've heard it said that emotion creates motion. This is essential when it comes to losing weight. Just like those folks in the before pictures, to transform your body you must first decide that you can't live another day in the body you currently have.

It's time to get your emotions stirred up. Make a list of all the reasons that you must lose weight and get fit. Get disturbed!

Step Two: Get Focused

Without clarity it's very hard to get where you want to go. Now that you're disturbed with the body you have, it's time to decide what the body you can accept looks like.

I want you to think in concrete and specific terms. Just like the captions under those before and after pictures - "Suzy lost 25 lbs", "Mike lost 8 inches from his waist", "Jenny went from a size 18 to a size 6" .

Get a clear picture in your mind of what you'll look like in your after picture and visualize what the caption will read.

Step Three: Get Moving

The time spent between your inspiration (now) and your action determines whether you will succeed or fail. Don't allow yourself to get stuck between inspiration and action - there is always something that you can do right now.

Don't you agree that you'll be happier living life in a fit, healthy and attractive body, rather than the body you have today? Of course you'll be happier.

What will you accept?

Dont Accept Less.  Live.  Win.

Wow! So much drama. Can't we all just get along?! lol I like both of you guys, I hate to see a conflict between you. Damn, now I want to give my two cents worth! lol Nobody can be held accountable for the way you live your life but yourself. If you're happy with who you are, then great. Don't let anybody tell you different and live your life to the fullest. But if you're not happy with who you are and the body you have, blaming others will only make you more miserable. Own up to it, and then take control of it. I get your point. Thanks for posting.

i can't get along with people who sell off exaggerated claims as miracle-cures to people who said, "F@#k the Atkins' diet and f@#k the South Beach diet!" I just want to do a sit-up in my living room and watching The Biggest Loser while eating recipes whose ingredients i can't even afford.

Well here's my old fashioned lol unwanted opinion ( hod on I need to pull myself from the floor) Good post Dave dam you hit the nail on the head to quote you "You have the body that you accept".. What do you not get about this. Sorry boys and girls goody good lovey dovey motivational stuff will only push a person that has become emotionally disapointed and settled into Obesity so far. In the end it is not the doctor telling you your going to DIE
if you dont change its something in your life or your heart or mind that screams at you ( remember the commercial I've fallen and I cant get up) I WANT TO LI|VE! It is you and only you that can make the decision to hurt others, its only you that can make the decision to want something better out of your life. Its only you that can find the inspiration and motivation to change. Trainers are only guides along that path like Priests they are guides along a spiritual path they cannot change a murderer, or in themselves save a murderer they can only offer guidence and offer a different path, but it is ultimately up to the murderer to take the new path that is offered just as ultimately you have to decide what type of body, and what type of life you want to live! I gave Dave 5 out of 5 stars for Standing up and not being afraid to say what needs to be said!

w8tlift3rb0y :

You are entitled to your opinion, which I disagree, with but your last paragraph is unwarranted and childish.

Who did I berate? The truth sometimes hurts but it doesn't mean it should be talked about. Excuses come in many sizes and shapes. They are still excuses. If looking at yourself before blaming everyone and everything else around you is bad motivational advice in your opinion then I'm sorry you feel that way.

If you actually read my post you would maybe understand that whether or not people hire a trainer, join a gym, start a diet or otherwise...its begins and ends with them and them alone.

The % of the population that actually has a metabolic condition preventing them from weight loss is tiny. The number of people who are overweight because of the choices they make is astronomical. NO one NEEDS a trainer. A trainer can be helpful, extremely helpful. People want a trainer because they have failed to make the right choices. And if you ask them, they will admit it.

In the future if you want to have a debate on an issue bring it on. If you want to provide insults and ridiculous commentary on subjects you seem to have no clue about - keep them to yourself.

If a post like this helps one person get off their duff it was worth it for me.

already having humbled myself after making creaton-like and childish comments in anger after having read your blog, i still have several retorts:

you berate anyone reading your post, who is overweight.
im not against taking responsibility, im against the idea that negative reinforcement accomplishes much in the long run, rather than a sound knowledge of consequences, visible or invisible to the naked eye.

please state that small number of the population.
if you've ever studied human biochemistry and physiology (ive been studying it since i was in high school), you would know that the body can, after certain severities of internal environment, change its own chemistry [prime example: if a 5' 10', healthy at 160lbs males gains weight to 220 lbs, he will start growing actual breast tissue-ive confirmed this with doctors]

as the obesity rate in this country stagnates and continues, so will the rate of metabolic disorders. additionally, everyone who i've trained (on and off my school campus) said 'yes' to me because they wanted help and they didn't know what else to do. many times, they didn't know which choices were right and when they actually chose something, they had no idea of its actual consequences.

how many people have you asked, "Did you choose a personal trainer simply because you made enough wrong choices, or was it because you simply you didn't know what in the world to do with a 'dumbbell' or how to train with arthritic knees at 30 years of age?" and they said, "I chose you because I've made too many wrong choices....i knew what a dumbbell was. I knew what kinds of foods did what. i knew if i spent 45 intense minutes a day at the gym, on the rowing machine and on elastics, id be fine."

more importantly, no one NEEDS a trainer. but they NEED a source of health, fitness and nutrition, who knows more than they knew apparently would know. most of the population doesn't know what an R.D. actually does. most of the population doesn't know how to sort through all the fitness information and lies thrown at them.

This time I came with valid arguments and some strong background information. You seem to be a successful internet trainer selling 10 minute workouts (60 minutes-5 to 6 minute warmup, minus 6 to 10 minutes warm-up sets, minus a 10 to 15 minute cool down might equal 10 minutes of intense training in between). However, you are ignorant of the actual population numbers who don't come to you with 15 to 80 pounds worth of fat breaking their knee joints into oblivion and wondering what the heck a complex carb or a polyunsaturated fat actually is.

God bless you sir, train hard and may you train many more.

-peace.

A PT is great when you need to push further or if you do not know the proper lifting techniques or how to use workout equipment. I agree that the rest is up to the individual. I hired my PT to enhance my existing program. It's making a difference, believe me! Once I have a handle on everything he has to teach me, I'm on my own again. To hire a PT is a very individual choice. How long to have the trainer train you is also very individual.

w8tlift3rboy,

It does seem that thyroid conditions are on the rise in this country. How can we explain this?
