The 2 big problems with the 'low fat' diet
yesterday by mja155 | filed in: Dieting
A lot of the health and weight issues that are currently wide-spread, have to do with our adopted attitude towards fat. The 'low fat' message is everywhere, nearly everything we eat has reduced fat content. What I am going to talk about today is the reason why 'low fat' is so bad for your health.

The assumption that fat is the 'bad guy' is based on 2 main things. First of all, fat has more than twice the calories per gram of carbohydrates or protein, and second, it seems logical that if you eat fat you will get fat. What we now know is that eating 'low fat' is in fact the problem. The government has spent hundreds of millions trying to prove its 'fat equals bad' theory. The reason for this is because there is a lot of money invested. Not only are foods that contain the labels 'low fat', 'reduced fat', 'fat free', etc huge sellers but also the foods we turn to in order to reduce our fat intake are cheap to produce and easy to distribute.

Know your body type
August 17, 2010

Before you start any diet or workout program you should know your body type. Once that is established, then you start the program. Here are the 3 body types:

Ectomorph: very lean, fast metabolism, little to know body fat, burn calories like crazy.

Mesomorph: a bit more muscular, medium-boned, natural bodybuilder.

Endomorph: bigger boned person, more body fat, slower metabolism.

Once you’ve established your body type, you can begin entering numbers into your formula. The first number is the amount of calories you should eat per day. For any muscle building diet you need calories for growth, energy to train, and energy to burn excess fat. These are the calorie breakdowns by body type:

Ectomoph: 20 calories per pound of body weight

Mesomorph: 18 calories per pound of body weight

Endomorph: 15 calories per pound of body weight

Stress
on 9/2/2010 by cutsbycorey | filed in: Goals and Motivation
When we are stressed, our adrenal glands produce excess amounts of a hormone called cortisol. According to Neil Shulman, author of the book, “Hormonal Balance”, cortisol controls body fat in amount and distribution as well as the bulk and strength of our muscles. He also states that excess cortisol can cause depression, severe mood swings as well as anxiety and insomnia. Also, higher cortisol production because of stress leads to weight gain, and weight gain can lead to more stress, creating a vicious cycle. ... read more

Shrink your midsection and tone your abs
on 9/2/2010 by cutsbycorey | filed in: Exercise and Workouts
Trying to lose the fat around your midsection? Or just trying to get the abs of your dreams? Here are some tips that can help you reach your goals.

The most fat is burned when abs are trained with very little in the stomach. You should also consider doing some type of cardio activity prior to working your abs so you minimize the chances of overexerting your ab muscles.

Between sets, flex your abs. This may help to build definition. Body builders have been known to stretch and flex between sets to increase muscle definition.

Try to only take a 1 minute rest, or less, in between abdominal exercises. This keeps the metabolism high, helping you burn fat at a greater rate.

Cutting calories will also help in toning your abdominal muscles. Excess calories become love handles, hips and butts, so cutting calories minimizes the chances of fat conversion. You can also benefit from reducing the amount of sodium added to food. Salt + Water + Fat =... read more

on 9/2/2010 by JenCassetty | filed in: Celebrity Fitness

The 2 real underlying reasons why we overeat
on 8/26/2010 by mja155 | filed in: Dieting
Could your current diet be killing you? There is overwhelming evidence pointing to the fact that we just aren't doing much right when it comes to nutrition. A big problem is that we are now able to isolate the sweetness in the foods that we love. Food simply tastes soo good and this taste comes at a serious cost.

The majority of us are addicted to sugary foods. They provide a quick burst of energy and this is a requirement for a lot of people. Most of us cannot wake up in the morning without some sort of extra stimulation and this seems perfectly normal. The fact that you need this extra energy is a huge indicator that your body is seriously malnourished, it simply should not be needed.

The food that is consumed throughout the day should keep energy levels up for an extended period of time. One of the big problems is that we skip meals. We don't eat when we're hungry, we eat when we are not hungry. There are serious issues with the way that we fuel our bodies.... read more

Ripped Abs - Variety and Diet
on 8/25/2010 by Rob1963 | filed in: Exercise and Workouts
Ripped Abs - Variety and Diet If you are like many people you would like to see your abdominal area looking like the proverbial six-pack. And like many of those folks you may think that you can “sit up” your way to those abs, or maybe crunch them into existence and that is just plain impossible. Unless you have a low body-fat percentage those abs are never going to peek through for the world to see. Two problems arise with this quest.

The first problem is the disproportional exercise done to your core. Concentrating on your abs is a great way to do permanent damage to yourself. You have to think about your core (or any area of your body for that matter) as a balancing act, because that’s what it is. Consider someone walking a tight rope and one end of that balancing pole keeps getting weight added. Gradually they are getting twisted and bent over in the opposite direction trying to counter that additional weight.

Your body does the same thing, but you don’t see it externally until the dama... read more

The weight loss health disorder and the 2 keys to reversing it
on 8/22/2010 by mja155 | filed in: Dieting
If you have struggled on a reduced calorie diet and still aren't seeing any results there may be a simple explanation to your problem. What I am going to have a look at today is insulin resistance and the effect that this has on weight management. Evidence shows that obesity is actually a health disorder that reduced calorie intake and physical exercise cannot cure.

So what is insulin?

Insulin is a hormone that is secreted into the blood stream by the pancreas and its role is to regulate blood sugar levels. It effectively acts as a messenger, transporting glucose (or blood sugar) into your bodys cells where it can be used as energy. Any excess glucose is turned into glycogen and stored in the liver and muscles and once these stores are used up, the rest is stored in the fat cells.

Insulin levels rise as a result of too much glucose in the blood and this effectively speeds up the process by which glucose is used or stored. Carbohydrat... read more

Research You Need to Know
on 8/20/2010 by Peace2u | filed in: Exercise and Workouts
Research You Need to Know Research conducted over the last 10 years has produced some important facts. Heavy weight training performing 6-8 repetitions is superior to sets of 12-15 for burning body fat. For 1-2 days after the training period, the research indicates that the body actually consumes a higher amount of calories by stimulating the metabolism. That's one of the main facets of turbulence training and why it gets results.

The research also indicates that high variable interval training is superior to that of slow steady pace cardio work for losing body fat and raising the metabolic rate. For longer term results, if you focus on the internal metabolic response your body gets from the workout instead of how many calories you burn from the steady state aerobic exercise you'll actually get better results. High variable interval training is not only better result producing, it is also more time efficient.

In terms of interval training, the important component of target heart rate... read more

Importance of Stretching
on 8/20/2010 by cutsbycorey | filed in: Exercise and Workouts
Never neglect the importance of warm up stretching. Take 5 to 10 minutes to warm up your muscles and stretch them thoroughly before you start exercising. This will help protect you from unneccessary injuries.

Stretching also has many other benefits. As you get older, movements which used to be easy become difficult. Getting improvement in your range of motion is one of the benefits of stretching you can experience. Stretching is one of the best ways to imporve your body’s capabilities.

Another benefit of stretching is improved coordination. More flexible joints, and limber muscles make motion easier, with the combination of improved muscle condition, you will find you have more physical dexterity and coordination.... read more
