THE (very) FAT GIRL.

I took part in an involuntary intervention yesterday.
Sitting in a coffee shop, a young girl, a very fat young girl, sat down at the table next to me. Clinically, she was morbidly obese. My guess was that she was 5’6” and over 275 pounds.
She has a frothy café’ drink, a bagel with two cream cheese packets and a double sized coffee cake. She spread both packets of cream cheese over the bagel. My estimate was about 1,500 calories. It was 6:45 am and at that rate she was eating well over 5,000 calories a day.
I admit that I was pretty disgusted by her but she was none of my business until… she pulled out a copy of a women’s fitness magazine and started turning the pages. She stopped at one of the usual nonsense, regurgitated articles like:
“3 MOVES TO YOUR BEST BUTT EVER.”
Her eyes pored over the article while she stuffed the bagel and cream cheese into her mouth.
In a precarious sort of my, she was now my business. I internally debated on if/how to respectfully approach her to try and help her. The coffee shop was empty of customers and the staff was busy so I moved my chair closer to her.
“Hey” She was taken back “Can I talk to you?” “About what?” “I’m a personal trainer, I want to talk to you about you.”
She smiled nervously and then put her head down. She moved to cover what was left of her bagel and coffee cake.
“I see you’re reading a fitness magazine. That means you want to get into shape, right?”
“Yes.” “I can help you.” She tightened up noticeably. “How?” “You’re fat and if you continue to eat like this, you’ll only get fatter. Hear what I have to say for the next five minutes and then if you want me to get lost, I will, OK?”
She nodded in agreement. Tears started to well up in her eyes.
“Throw out the bagel. Throw out the coffee cake and the drink. All of it, now.”
She leaned over and threw everything in the trash then she folded her hands and put on a very brave face and looked me right in the eye.
“Now what?” “Now you need to stop eating this crap. It’ll kill you. You need to exercise everyday. How old are you?”
“Twenty-six.” “Your life depends on it.”
I detailed for her what needed to be done, hour by hour, day by day, step by step. I wrote out my WARRIORS AND GODDESSES WORKOUT for her and every demonstrated a few exercises right in the coffee shop. She took notes and asked questions.
“I thought that since I’m overweight that I should only do cardio?”
“That’s a good way to stay overweight. You must lift weight, and run, and climb stairs and sprint, sweat and cry and you need to do it until you feel like throwing up. You got it?”
We talked for fifteen minutes more. I broke down every excuse she threw at me.
“No time.” “No more coffee shop breakfast. Now you have time.”
“Can’t afford a gym.” “You can now after quitting the coffee shop breakfast.”
“Too embarrassed to work out at a gym.” “Don’t need a gym. Workout at home.”
“My lower back hurts.” “Lose weight and then it won’t hurt as much.”
I REFUSED TO BE AN ENABLE TO HER. I WAS ADAMANT.
“You need to get moving right now. Your life depends on it.”
We walked outside and I gave her my card. “Keep in touch, questions, anything, call me, email me.”
She hugged me and then moved to hail a taxi.
“What are you doing? You walk to work from now on.” “I’ll be late.” “Be late today and tomorrow get up earlier.”
