Helping Kids Set Fitness Goals

Helping Kids Set Fitness Goals When setting exercise goals with children, one must keep in mind that kids often don't have a grasp on how long it will take to get better at the exercise at hand.  Setting goals is an abstract concept for younger children.  This is especially true for children that have not participated in a great deal of sports outside of the school setting.  If you want your child(ren) to learn push-ups, for example, then help them set a goal for that month.  The most important aspect of this is that the child is doing the push-up correctly (and it doesn't matter if it is bent knee or straight leg style). I discourage people from calling bent knee sit-ups "girl" push-ups, because boys that can't do a push-up at a young age will feel frustrated and give up.  The child must be developmentally ready for it.  To set the goal, have the child do as many as they can until they can do no more (correctly), then record it.  D... read more

Purpose Driven

on 9/17/2009 | filed in: Goals and Motivation
Work hard at whatever it is you do and don't expect someone to hand you a future.  It is up to you to reach your goals (fitness or otherwise).  Don't sit and wait around for someone to say "Hey, let me give you this opportunity."  You have to give to receive and you have to know who you are and where you are going.  It's up to you to make your own opportunities.  To determine your own destiny.  To be your own source of motivation.  When opportunities come around, don't squander them.  Don't take for granted what you've been given.  Those opportunities may never come around again.  Why be jealous of others?  Every last one of us has something important and unique to contribute as we forge along!  It's just a matter of figuring out what it is that makes us who we are.

On Life and Goals

on 8/16/2009 | filed in: Goals and Motivation
On Life and Goals I haven't posted for a while because I just didn't have anything to post.  Currently some sad events have consumed my thoughts and energy.  When things beyond your control are happening, take the time out to do some reflecting and work through it.  Whatever it is that you face.  All of the sad things that happen in life are still part of LIFE.  Heal yourself, help others and move forward.  That includes moving forward with YOUR life and your goals.  Eventually your sadness can be transformed into strength that will propel you forward to success in your life.  Remember that success has much to do with how happy you are in your journey toward your goals as well as achieving the goal itself.  It's also about learning that we are here to help other people move forward as well.     ... read more

POEM....COMPETITION MIND-SET

POEM....COMPETITION MIND-SET Poem written by "KPModel"   COMPETITION MIND-SET

Find purpose in your aspirations
Dare to use your wildest imaginations

Go the path, even if you must fight through it alone
Don't wait for others....YOU set the tone

Trample trepidation
It will devour your motivation

Don't let one minute of time slip by
or you'll end up wondering "What if?"  or "Why didn't I try?"

Jump in with both feet like you just can't be beat
You'll be stronger and build character as you dare to compete!

Let your drive be your gauge and your confidence your measure
Remember trophies gather dust and are NOT the most valuable treasure

Trophies are mere symbols that rest on a shelf
Through it all it's most important to be true to yourself

Focus on Yourself. This is for YOU!!

on 4/5/2009 | filed in: Goals and Motivation
When it comes to working out, people often shy away from gyms because they are self-conscious or comparing themselves to others that have worked out for a long time.  People in the 40 plus group that are just starting up or getting back into the gym after years of limited exercise may also feel that way.  The MOST important thing is get your focus first.  This is YOU time and your goals should be for you.  If you are working out to please someone else, you will never continue with your goals.  It doesn't matter if you have the latest and greatest workout wear.  Good running shoes are another story.  Need to keep your joints healthy.  Back to the point which is YOU.  If you are not ready to join a gym, exercise at home with your favorite music!  If you go for a jog or a walk, use an i-pod.  They have come down in price a great deal.  I would be lost without music during my workouts!!  What are some other motivati... read more
