Ways to Avoid Fatigue-Crashing After Work

on 1/14/2009
Ways to Avoid Fatigue-Crashing After Work I've found that almost everyone has this problem. I hear tons of people say "once I get home from work I just have no energy to go to the gym, I crash." I've been there... I've crashed many times.

Here's some advice to help avoid fatique after work

Are you chugging coffee all day to get through work? If you are, try cutting way back, to zero ideally (over several weeks). Then take a shot of caffeine about 4 pm to pep you up for your workout.

Are you dieting? If you are starving yourself for calories by eating nothing but salad, you'll have no energy for exercising. Try having a carb snack right before you get off work (with your caffeine fix if you choose). Your fuel tank may be a little empty. I know many people have reported this using the popular atkin's diet. Low carb diets often leave you lacking energy. An afternoon carb-snack shouldn't hurt most diet plans and can out-weigh the negatives of sleeping through a workout.

If you can motivate yourself to work out, you'll burn off way more than the snack - and a good chunk of your dinner calories.

Also, you might be in a work out funk and need to try something new. A lot of times boredom can lead to tiredness. Avoid boredom at all costs when working out. Try a different machine, or swimming, or get outside (maybe wait until summer). Exercise needs to be fun and not a grind.

Hope this advice helps ease the fatique problem after work.

I don't feel like I have that "after work energy crash" like I used to now that I eat smaller meals throughout the day. Food for thought!!

Great post.... I actually prefer to workout first thing in the morning but that's not always possible with a hectic schedule. So instead I fit it in either before lunch, late afternoon or early evening. Because those times are so inconsistent, I just make sure I eat every 3 hrs and eat clean...this way, I have enough "fuel" in my body to carry me throughout the entire day.

I always work out in the mornig. But there are times I just few kinda blah so I either do somethings I have not done for some time or just take a long walk.

You can also try getting a workout partner. I find that if I know someone is going to be there waiting for me and relying on me to motivate them, then it's a motivator for me to "cut through the funk".

Another way to avoid the crash after work is to avoid work ;) But that is a little harder to do if you have bills to pay...

Ozzie.... coffee at 3pm?!?! You're darn right it does the trick. I'm too high energy to even have coffee on a daily basis but one day, I did happen to have a Starbuck's at 4pm. By 11pm, I was down in the basement running on my treadmill in hopes that I'd tire myself out to go to sleep! :)
