I know this is the wrong season to be writing about swimming, but I've been using my friend's indoor pool this winter to swim laps and I've found it to be a great alternative to running.
My friend and I have been swimming laps 3 days a week this winter in order to keep our girlish figures. While I enjoy running when it's nice out, during the cold winter it's not the most enjoyable exercise. Also, I've learned through reading fitness articles and through my own personal experience that swimming is so much easier on the joints. Swimming takes away the pressure on the knees that goes with running. Not only that, but you never have to worry about shin splints when swimming.
Here's some reasons why swimming is a great alternative to running:
1. Swimming is a lot funner - We've been very consistent with our swimming schedule and I think a lot of that is because we have fun doing it.
2. Swimming is easier on your joints - As I mentioned before, swimming is easier on your joints than running and other similar fitness activities.
3. Full body swimming workout - Swimming works your entire body very well. Not only will your legs get a great workout, but your upper body gets just as much of an exhaust.
That being said, there is a big disadvantage in that you need a pool. And if it's the winter time, you need an indoor pool. I recommend looking into joining a large gym in your area. It's always nice to escape the cold and jump into a nice warm pool.
